Possibly might still be one or two people around Dallas/Fort Worth that doesn't know about or have forgot this weekend is the Paste Untapped Indie Music & Beer Festival at Panther Island Pavilion - Fort Worth.
Headliners like Justin Townes Earle, Deer Tick, Sarah Jaffe and Tennis front the bill that includes local favs The Orbans, Somebody's Darling, Skeleton Coast & Dove Hunter.
We caught up with Deer Tick's Rob B. Crowell (keyboard/saxophone) to find out about the bands new studio album releasing this fall, living in Nashville and upcoming shows.
GBS:
How's the new album coming?
Rob:
It's all done! I've got to work on some parts for a string quartet on Thursday [4/18] then John and I are going to be at the session to make sure everything goes down and that's it I believe. It should be mixed by next week.
GBS:
Do you guys have an official title for it yet?
Rob:
We do but we're playing that one close.
GBS:
Steve Berlin is a pretty cool cat to have in the studio with you these days. How's the vibe between the bands style of recording and Steve's producing style?
Rob:
He's pretty awesome! John and I are actually in another band with him. We're in a band called Diamond Rugs with him.
GBS:
Have you and Steve had a chance to lay down any dueling sax parts on the record?
Rob:
We did some sax parts on the Diamond Rugs album but not on the Deer Tick one.
GBS:
So how is Nashville treating you as the current home base for the band? Do you guys catch any live shows around town at Mercy Lounge or Exit/In?
Rob:
We're only home for like a week and a half so we're kinda laying low right now but generally we like to check out a lot of stuff. I got a text from John today actually that there was a band playing.
GBS:
Next week the band is playing 40 Watt in Athens correct? Do you have any scheduled dates after that or are you all taking some time off before the new release?
Rob:
Yeah, that's right. We have some scattered stuff through the summer. We're laying low until the album comes in the fall.
GBS:
I caught a tweet from Sean over at Daytrotter that Deer Tick has a new 7 inch split with Guards available. Is this from a recent session or past Daytrotter session?
Rob:
Yeah, that's been in the works for a couple of weeks but it's cool. We're fans of Guards! They toured with us for awhile and they're pretty awesome. They bought us the biggest bottle of wine I've ever seen in my life actually. We had it on stage at Webster Hall and everything was covered in red wine by the end of the night. That was an older session. It's been a little bit since we did a Daytrotter session.
Come hang this Saturday and catch Deer Tick live at Untapped Fest. Until then check out their recent performance from Pioneertown, CA.
