Cold and Soaked Fans Endure the Final Days of 35 Denton

35 Denton
Review/Photos by: Sarah Sellers

It's almost St. Patty's Day and that means one thing in my book...SXSW week!!! I'm excited to head down to Austin for a long weekend of food trucks, people watching and music!! I'll be interviewing artists and covering as many shows as my ears can handle so check back for exclusive content right here on GoodBAMMSho.

Last Saturday I started off the music week with some local acts at 35 Denton. I had high hopes to see The Cannabinoids featuring Sarah Jaffe but unfortunately the finicky Texas weather made other plans.

Heavy storms hit Denton early in the evening shutting down registration and both outdoor stages. All of the bands scheduled to play outdoors were quickly moved to inside venues including The Cannabinoids. Once I caught wind that they were moved to The Hive it was already too late. Since registration was closed my paper tickets were no good and the line to see the hip-hop crooners and the enchanting Miss Jaffe was wrapped around the block. Luckily the night wasn't a total wash and I was able to check out Solange at The Hive.

Killer Mike - The Hive
When I walked into the venue Atlanta's own Killer Mike was wrapping up and I was definitely bummed that I didn't get to check out his entire set. Jumping into the crowd and preaching "Hip-Hop is my church" the crowd was definitely feeling Killer Mike.

Solange - The Hive
I admittedly haven't always been the biggest Solange fan but her latest single, Losing You, has been blowing up my headphones since it came out last fall. After an hour delay due to the venue change Solange finally stepped out on stage with your retro fitted crew. Decked out in her own vintage garb and her signature afro she immediately apologized for the delay and insisted she didn't keep her fans waiting any longer, even though half of the instruments were still not working.

Solange - The Hive
Minus a few glitches in the beginning Solange didn't miss a beat throughout her entire set. From her uber cool stage presence, super sweet demeanor and sexy dance moves she was completely infectious. Playing tunes off her latest effort, True, she serenaded the crowd with a unique cover of Selena's If I Fall in Love before turning it up with Losing You. "I wanna see you dance!"

The large gap between the barricade and stage seemed to be an issue with most artists of the night. When Solange's request to get the fans closer was denied she jumped into the crowd getting super personal with the excited fans. Coming into the show I might not have been the biggest fan but my mind was definitely changed by the end of the night.

Beach Fossils - 35 Denton
Sunday didn't bring the rain but it was definitely cooler than usual which resulted in a sparse crowd during the late afternoon. Beach Fossils started off our afternoon in the cold. From tuning issues to frozen bloody hands (yes the drummer is a bad ass) the NYC Indie based group pushed their way through their set to a semi-hyped up crowd.

Beach Fossils - 35 Denton
Maybe it was the cold, or maybe it was the overly excited food truck guy hurling shirts to passerby's but I had a difficult time getting into their set. But did I mention the drummer played with bloody hands...serious brownie points in my book!

35 Denton
After Beach Fossils I ventured over to the small strip of food/vintage trucks to find out that yes, you can shop out of a bus and apparently hula hoops are making a comeback.

Aside from the "awesome" weather I think Denton has something special in the works. I'll definitely be coming back to 35 Denton in 2014.
