Blending visual art with music has never been a simple task for most. Two different mediums can at times fight one another artistically and confuse or disconnect the audience.
Sometimes the right music can find the artists through seemingly separate channels only to collectively follow the art back to the true inspiration.
Maybe that is how painter/writer Ty Clark and filmmaker Kristopher Rutherford found the band Seryn? Clark and Rutherford have both been inspired to share Seryn's "work of art" in sound. The concept is to tell the story of six individual artists standing before a blank canvas that will soon become the bands new album! This effort to capture Seryn's musical journey through film will be titled "A Canvas of Sound: Seryn, An Independent Film".
Ty Clark, aka: SAMO4PREZ, wears a lot of artistic hats. Thirty-five plus years of international creation as an artist, writer, philanthropist, fashion designer and social entrepreneur (my favorite title!). His art has been shown in over 15 states throughout the U.S. not to mention he's the nephew to world renowned sculptor and raku artist Conway "Jiggs" Pierson. You could say it runs in the family!
Kristopher Rutherford is a storyteller with seemly a lot of inspiration still left to share. His camera serves as his vehicle that has driven his career for ten years now. In filmmaking Kristopher has had the opportunity to take part in creative works for Google, Verizon, Sony, Live Nation and many more large organizations. Like Ty, he also calls Austin, TX home which I'm sure the sights, sounds and famous "weirdness" keep the creative juices flowing for both gentlemen!
Seryn is a six piece band from Denton, TX that combine guitar, viola, banjo, bass, accordion, ukulele and lots of percussion together in a way that demands a much stronger expression than "folk" to describe. From a roommate situation in 2009, Nathan James Allen and Trenton Wheeler had kicked around the idea of starting a band but only if a female that could sing and play was first found. Enter Chelsea Bohrer who first saw the duo play together at a show and soon joined them as a trio. Aaron David Stoner and Chris Semmelbeck caught the trio live soon after and the original five were complete.
Seryn's debut album "This is Where We Are" was released in 2011 with continued success.
Chelsea has recently decided to focus on family with Jenny Moscoso joining the ranks and also the addition of a sixth member with Carlo Canlas.
Touring throughout 2013, Seryn will soon play an official showcase at SXSW and then return to Denton to play what could be their most dynamic performance to date at the Murchison Performing Arts Center on UNT campus. This performance will end the film as the grand finale.
Creating art through film is never a cheap process and the filmmakers need your help to capture the next chapter to Seryn's repertoire by donating through the films official indiegogo fundraising campaign: http://igg.me/at/acanvasofsound
"Perks" that start out where many campaigns require large donations, a $25 contribution can net you a digital download of the completed film plus being entered into a raffle for a 7.5" x 11" original samo4prez painting on paper. Dinner with the filmmakers, VIP access to all the SXSW Seryn shows, visit to the film set, four VIP tickets to Seryn's Murchison performance and six VIP tickets to a private Austin or Dallas screening of the film are all available within the higher contribution amounts.
Have a look at the video put together by the filmmakers to better understand their vision and catch a sneak peek from the new film...
